How to use Rotate & Flip

  1. Add the image

Drop in the photo that is the wrong way round.

  2. Rotate or flip

Turn in 90° steps, straighten by a few degrees, or mirror horizontally and vertically.

  3. Check text in the image

Flipping mirrors any text, which is almost never what you want.

  4. Download

The orientation is written into the file so it displays correctly everywhere.

When to use Rotate & Flip

  • Fixing a photo that appears sideways after transferring it between devices
  • Straightening a slightly tilted horizon
  • Mirroring a selfie so text in the shot reads correctly
  • Correcting a scan that came out upside down

FAQ

No. Rotations of 90°, 180°, and 270° are lossless. Custom angle rotations use high-quality interpolation.
Yes. You can combine any rotation with horizontal or vertical flips before exporting.
The file carries an EXIF orientation flag that your phone honours and the other application ignores. Rotating here rewrites the pixels themselves, so every viewer shows it correctly.
Not for 90°, 180° or 270° — those are lossless rearrangements. Straightening by an arbitrary angle does resample the image and crop the corners slightly.
Rotating turns the image around its centre. Flipping mirrors it, producing a reversed image — which also reverses any text in the frame.
Yes, with a small arbitrary-angle rotation. Do it before cropping, because straightening trims the edges to remove the exposed corners.

About Rotate & Flip

Photos that appear correct on your phone and sideways on a computer are almost always an EXIF orientation problem. The camera records the image in the sensor's native orientation plus a flag saying which way up it should be shown, and not every application honours that flag. Rotating here rewrites the actual pixels, so the fix holds everywhere.

Rotation in 90° increments is lossless — the pixels are rearranged, not resampled. Straightening by an arbitrary angle is not: the image has to be resampled and then cropped slightly to remove the corners, so you lose a small amount of edge and a little sharpness.

Flipping deserves a moment of thought. Mirroring a selfie makes it match how you see yourself in a mirror, but it also reverses any text in the frame, and reversed text is instantly noticeable to everyone except the person who flipped it.

Tips and limits

  • 90° rotations are lossless. Arbitrary-angle straightening resamples and crops slightly.
  • Sideways-on-computer, upright-on-phone means an EXIF orientation flag some software ignores.
  • Flipping mirrors text. Check the frame for signs, labels and logos before mirroring.
  • Straighten before cropping, since straightening trims the edges.
  • Scanners often produce upside-down pages when the feeder takes the stack the wrong way up — check every page.
