FAQ

Meters per second (m/s), kilometers per hour (km/h), miles per hour (mph), knots, feet per second (ft/s), and Mach (approximate, based on standard atmosphere).
Mach is approximated using the speed of sound at sea level in a standard atmosphere (343 m/s). Actual Mach varies with temperature and altitude.
Multiply by 0.6. The exact factor is 0.621, so this slightly underestimates — which is the safe direction when reading a speed limit.
A knot is one nautical mile per hour, and a nautical mile is one minute of latitude. That makes distance and position calculations directly relatable to a chart, which is why the unit persists.
Multiply by 3.6. So 10 m/s is 36 km/h. Going the other way, divide by 3.6.
No, it is the inverse — time per distance rather than distance per time. A 5 min/km pace is 12 km/h, and a faster pace is a smaller number, which is the opposite of speed.

About Speed Converter

Speed conversion matters most when driving in another country, where getting it wrong has immediate consequences. The useful approximations: 100 km/h is about 62 mph, 50 km/h is about 31 mph, and 30 km/h is about 19 mph. Those three cover most road signs you will meet.

For a quick mental conversion from km/h to mph, multiply by 0.6 — it is a little under the true 0.621, so it errs on the cautious side, which is the right direction for a speed limit. Going the other way, mph to km/h, multiply by 1.6.

Knots deserve a note because they are not arbitrary: one knot is one nautical mile per hour, and a nautical mile is one minute of latitude. That relationship makes knots genuinely convenient for navigation, which is why aviation and shipping still use them. One knot is about 1.15 mph or 1.85 km/h.

Tips and limits

  • km/h to mph: multiply by 0.6. mph to km/h: multiply by 1.6.
  • Useful anchors: 100 km/h ≈ 62 mph, 50 km/h ≈ 31 mph, 30 km/h ≈ 19 mph.
  • One knot ≈ 1.15 mph ≈ 1.85 km/h.
  • m/s is the scientific standard; multiply by 3.6 to get km/h.
  • Running pace is time per distance, which is the inverse of speed — do not confuse the two.
