How to use Add Watermark to PDF

  1. Add the PDF

Drop in the document. A preview of its pages appears beside the options.

  2. Type the watermark

Enter the text, such as DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL. Keep it short: long text is shrunk to fit the page.

  3. Choose how it looks

Pick the position, color, opacity, angle and size. A pale gray at around 30% opacity stays readable without hiding the page.

  4. Download

The watermark is drawn onto every page of the file you download.

When to use Add Watermark to PDF

  • Marking a contract draft as DRAFT before it circulates
  • Labeling internal documents CONFIDENTIAL
  • Putting a name or company on a document you share
  • Marking sample or review copies

FAQ

It is drawn into the page content, so a PDF reader will not offer to remove it. Someone with a PDF editor could still cover or delete it, so treat a watermark as a label, not as protection.
Latin, Cyrillic and Hebrew letters work. Right-to-left text is placed in logical order without reordering and Arabic is not shaped, so those watermarks may look wrong.
No. The watermark is drawn in your browser and the file never leaves it.
Not here. This tool stamps text only.
Yes. The mark is placed against the page as it is displayed, so it reads the same way up on rotated pages.

About Add Watermark to PDF

A watermark is a label printed behind or over the content of every page. It tells the reader what status the document has, and discourages passing it off as final.

Here it is drawn into the page content itself rather than added as an annotation, so it appears in every viewer and in print. It is also not a security feature: anyone with a PDF editor can cover or remove it.

Right-to-left scripts are limited. Hebrew letters are drawn, but without reordering, and Arabic is not shaped, so such a watermark may look wrong.

Tips and limits

  • Use a gray at 20 to 40% opacity so the text of the page stays readable.
  • A 45 degree diagonal across the center is the classic placement for DRAFT and CONFIDENTIAL.
  • Watermark after you have signed or numbered the document, not before.
  • For protection against copying or editing, use Protect PDF as well.
