About Add Page Numbers to PDF

Page numbers make a long document referable: in a meeting, in a legal exchange, in a table of contents. Many exports and scans have none.

The numbers are drawn into the page, positioned against the page as it is displayed. A landscape page rotated in the file still gets its number at the bottom of what you see.

Every page is numbered, the cover included. To leave the cover unnumbered, split it off, number the rest starting at 2, and merge them again.

Tips and limits

  • To continue another document, set Start at to its last page number plus one.
  • Page 1 of N uses the number on the last page, so a document starting at 5 with three pages reads Page 5 of 7.
  • Number after merging, so the numbering is continuous.
  • Use a bottom position unless the pages have a footer there.
