How to use Split PDF

About Split PDF
Splitting a PDF is the counterpart to merging, and it matters more than people expect for privacy. Sending a whole 60-page document when someone asked for page 12 means handing over 59 pages they did not need — often including information that was never meant for them.
Page ranges here are inclusive and one-based, which is to say 1-5 gives you five pages starting at the first. That sounds obvious, but PDF readers frequently display a different number in the page box than the actual page index, because of cover pages and roman-numeral front matter. Trust the thumbnails rather than the number printed on the page.
Extraction copies pages without re-encoding, so the output keeps the exact quality of the source and the resulting files sum to roughly the size of the original. Splitting is not a way to make a document smaller, and Compress PDF is barely one either: in Lossless mode it only rewrites the file structure, while Balanced and Strong re-encode the images that dominate a large PDF.
Tips and limits
- Ranges are inclusive: 1-5 gives you pages 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
- The page number printed on a page is often not its index — front matter shifts everything. Go by the thumbnails.
- Splitting does not shrink anything. The parts add up to the whole.
- Extracting a page from a signed document breaks the signature, because the signature covers the whole file.
- If you only need to remove a few pages rather than extract some, Remove Pages is the faster route.
